Thrissur city and the area around it have a number of
museums, art schools, and institutes, which are dedicated to preserving
and promoting the rich cultural traditions of Kerala. The well known Vadakkunathan
Temple also is located in the center of the city.
Vadakkunathan Temple (Religious): Thrissur city is built
around the Vadakkunathan Temple, which is located on a hill at the centre
of the city. Non-Hindus are not allowed to enter this temple, which is also
known as the Rishabhadri or Thenkailasam (Kailash of the South). This temple
is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple complex also has a number of small
shrines within it, dedicated to different deities, apart from the main Vadakkunathan
Temple. The temple is known for its traditional architecture. The richly
carved pagoda like wooden rooftop of this temple is an excellent example
of the classical architecture of Kerala. This temple is famous all over
Kerala for its annual Pooram festival, which is held in the month of April/May.
Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral (Religious): Thrissur has
a number of churches and the Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral is the most famous
amongst them. The building of this church is impressive and worth visiting.
Town Hall (Monument): The Town Hall is an important landmark
in Thrissur and is located in the northern part of the city. You will find
a collection of interesting artefacts in an art gallery within this impressive
building.
Archaeological Museum (Museum): You must visit the Archaeological
Museum in Thrissur and make it a point to see the royal chariot kept there.
This museum is located on the main Museum Road.
Art Museum (Museum): The Art Museum is another interesting
place to visit in Thrissur. It is located near the archaeological museum.
This museum has a good collection of artefacts, which includes woodcarvings,
sculptures, traditional masks and brass lamps.
Zoo (Amusement Park): The Thrissur Zoo is an interesting
place for children. It is located between the Art museum and the Archaeological
museum. The main attraction of this zoo is its snake park, which has a good
collection of different species of snakes.
